I received this from Boadie last weekend and after reading the front and back covers still didn’t quite believe it wasn’t a soft porn novel about boats and gays
i IMAGINE what was going on was that the publishers noticed that one of the first things people say about the aubrey/maturin books is “these books are full of some really technical boat-related discussions and that turns a lot of people off” and thought “how do we make people see these books as FRESh, YOUNG, SEXY???”
i thought all the technical discussion was supposed to go on by over us as a sort of weird literary joke even as it was correct

the plot of the series IS a romance between two men
it might be a platonic-love one rather than one full of soft porn but yeah
and yeah the author knew what he was talking about with the technical sailing stuff but the author also knew that for the most part his readers would be on a level with maturin & some of the shit is absolutely a joke put in for those readers who’d get it (i am almost NEVER well-versed enough to get it, and right now i can’t remember the details of any of the couple i HAVE noticed were jokes, unfortunately)
& u have to read between the lines a lot
but anyway yeah
these covers are accurate tbh :B
i mean they put romance novel covers on jane austen and she’s just as “read-between-the-lines”-y
