Love is when you realize the beloved is always in your mind, not as the main object of contemplation, but as the constant imagined audience to your thoughts.
the worst thing is that Sherlock is clearly copying what John did at the wedding.
He probably has, like, a room in the Mind Palace dedicated to the Wedding Hug.
This, he tells himself as he stands before the pedestal housing that moment, is what it looks like. Comfort. Generosity. Dare he say, love?
And so when John needs comfort, this is what he knows how to do. He wraps his hand around the back of John’s neck because it makes you feel so safe, it makes you feel like nothing in the world can ever hurt you again and he holds on to John’s arm because when you’re drifting and confused you need an anchor.
And he holds on, which is something he learned by himself, he holds on until the last shattered sob.
